george h.w. bush had good growth. he lost the election because bill clinton and ross perot convinced people the economy was struggling. this race this year looks a little bit like 2004. george w. bush had very struggling numbers. not so strong, decent third quarter, decent third quarter helped president bush heading into his re-election campaign. look how weak growth has been in this election year in the obama presidency? well below even what it was in 2004 for george w. bush and the second quarter drops more. very anemic growth. we don't know the third quarter numbers. we'll get those before the election. president obama we know he's trying to do something no one's done with fdr, win with the unemployment rate above 7.2%. look at gdp numbers to win, it would be a bit of history. >> certainly would be. john, thanks very much. we're going to have much more coverage, full coverage of tonight's debate president obama and governor romney face-to-face as american voters weigh their choice. the first presidential debate tak

george w. bush mia right now on the campaign trail. is it because he doesn't want to campaign for mitt romney or mitt romney doesn't want bush campaigning for him? >> well, i have to assume it's because the former president bush does not want to. because there are things he could very usefully do. he remains a controversial figure. a lot of americans blame him for the economic crisis. so it would be most likely unwise to have him on a big stage doing big rallies. but he could be a powerful fundraiser. one of the challenges that mitt romney has had is he's spending a lot of time still raising money in person. the very biggest donors want to see their candidate. but they would be just as happy or almost as happy with the former president as they would be with a possible future president. if george bush were doing those events, that would be a great load off mitt romney's shoulders. >> what do you think, donna, on this? you're a close observer. i want to point out, biden's favorability 42%, not 43%. there's the right number right there. w

back in 2000, the establishment group believed that al gore beat george bush in that debate. go back and watch that and you will laugh and the genuine article. it's not exactly fair the debate itself. richard nixon had to stand on the same stage with jack kennedy. reagan never said what he would do to spring the hostages. that was tough enough, wouldn't you say? against pesky ross perot as well. john mccain had to defend an economy falling all around him. but by the time we get here on thursday this week, it's going to matter and no one knows how. it's one of the reasons that i've been caught up in politics since i can remember because you really don't know how the
